(outside during another "let's-try-to-graduate party")

"Jason! Stop eating and work!"

Your message has been sent

this one, to be exact....

Hi Professor Zyglidopoulos,

Here is my final paper on Harley Davidson for 4E11. Once it's been
looked at, could you please fill out and return that "Caltech Course
Evaulation" form I gave you on the last day of class? I handed it to
you in an airmail envelope that had sort of red and blue edges; you
might remember it. You don't need to worry about going through the
old papers I've handed in and writing a long summary of my work
(though you can if you'd like :) ), because the professors here seem
to barely glance at the forms we receive.

I would appreciate it if it could be returned as quickly as possible,
as I need to be able to get together everything ASAP for my own
graduation. If it's convenient for you, it would actually be better
if you could just fax the form to our Study Abroad office at the
following number:

+1 626 796 3590

Thanks for filling out the form, and thanks also for the great class;
I enjoyed it a lot,

Jason Yosinski

...meaning I finally finished my 4E11 paper, after spending far too
much time on something that at most one person will ever read.

Matlab: 1 Me: 0

Times I've installed Matlab in the last day: 4

R14 SP3 (newer than my SP2)
R2006a (oh look, an even newer one!)
R14 SP3 (oh but now they screwed up X11, better try older one)
R14 SP2 (not old enough yet.. back to SP2...)

and each time... a 1.5G download!

just one paragraph

is all i'm going to write... then i'll go do my laundry. I think i'll
even time myself...

ok... well it took me 38 minutes... to write actually two paragraphs..
165 words....

so... i have 1000 words now.. if i need 2000 more... that's... 7 hours
and 40 minutes!!!!!!

so much!!! maybe i'll just go to bed now.......*siigh*

while 'doing' my 4e7 paper...

why is it that right now i just reallllyyyyyy want to do my laundry,
or to pack, or to do any other mundane chore? anything but my paper?
i also remember ealier in the term... actually really enjoying just
cleaning up my room, and now i also am excited to do.... my senior
thesis, my own laser scanner thing, hang gliding, and to find a job.
and yet other times i'm just dead inside, not wanting to do any of
these things... i don't know what the huge difference is... i should
come back and read this next time i'm feeling more depressed about my
whole life.

osh

soo much to do.... i dont' even know how to make an appropriate todo list..

one of the things is 'import photos'... why don't they make picasa for mac?!?!?!? WHHWHHYYYY!!!??!?!?! i tried importing stuff into iPhoto, but it just sucks sooo much! whoever designed iPhoto should be shot... some mac programs are kind of nice, but sometimes it seems they TRY to make them hard to use... it's not a lack of features so much as things they deliberately ADD to make it hard to use.

i hate computers.

moving

i'm moving just downstairs to avery 140.. gonna be living with harold for this next year... gosh, it's really hard to fit all my stuff in; somehow it seems like i have even less space here than in the tiny single i had over the summer... oh well.. ryan's living next door at the moment, so i have great wireless ;), though he's moving in a while i guess, so i'll have to find something else then.

next up: get the projector mounted somehow in lower fish bowl, move the couch into my room, get a computer for movies/music in LFB, discuss UCC plans with harold :)

"Advice to a Girl," by Thomas Campion

Saw this in the intro to a cookbook :)

Never love unless you can
Bear with all the faults of man!
Men sometimes will jealous be
Though but little cause they see,
And hang the head as discontent,
And speak what straight they will repent.

Men, that but one Saint adore,
Make a show of love to more;
Beauty must be scorned in none,
Though but truly served in one:
For what is courtship but disguise?
True hearts may have dissembling eyes.

Men, when their affairs require,
Must awhile themselves retire;
Sometimes hunt, and sometimes hawk,
And not ever sit and talk:
If these and such-like you can bear,
Then like, and love, and never fear!

nark

well... i worked all day today... and resolved a total of one bug :-D

though, to be fair, it was the "let individual modules log at their own levels" bug.. which was a bit of a pain to implement... i swear, every time i look at my code, i see how i would do it differently next time... maybe that means i'm getting better at it? ;)

one can hope..... one can hope....

dang it worked!

that was too easy.... :-O

Posting from my new Powerbook

So I got a powerbook 12" the other day... i really like it so far :). Anyway, if you've never used one, it has this pretty cool thing called a dashboard... basically you push F12 or put your mouse in one corner of the screen and it slides into view... giving you access to lots of little 'widgets' that you download. One of them is a blogger poster that lets you just type in a quick message. Hopefully it works... well if you see this, then I guess it did :)

A Lecture Upon the Shadow

[one of my favorite poems, by one of my favorite poets]
Stand still, and I will read to thee
A lecture, love, in love's philosophy.
These three hours that we have spent,
Walking here, two shadows went
Along with us, which we ourselves produc'd.
But, now the sun is just above our head,
We do those shadows tread,
And to brave clearness all things are reduc'd.
So whilst our infant loves did grow,
Disguises did, and shadows, flow
From us, and our cares; but now 'tis not so.
That love has not attain'd the high'st degree,
Which is still diligent lest others see.

Except our loves at this noon stay,
We shall new shadows make the other way.
As the first were made to blind
Others, these which come behind
Will work upon ourselves, and blind our eyes.
If our loves faint, and westwardly decline,
To me thou, falsely, thine,
And I to thee mine actions shall disguise.
The morning shadows wear away,
But these grow longer all the day;
But oh, love's day is short, if love decay.
Love is a growing, or full constant light,
And his first minute, after noon, is night.

-- John Donne
This poem elegantly illustrates an often overlooked dynamic of relationships, though recently I've been convinced that there certainly can be more to the story.

bPlanner + Harry

Well, I started coding the planner... which I've temporarily named 'bPlanner'. I guess the b is for binary, or beams, or maybe backup ;) heh. Haven't made a horrific amount of progress, but getting there... spent a while trying to get some tricky preprocessor stuff working.

Oh, and here's a pic of Harry. Harry and his parents, Brian and Erna Stoltz, live in Avery with me... unfortunately they're moving out next year, mostly because Caltech housing is stupid (that's the abbreviated version).

Oh, and I stole this pic from Fiona.

mmm...sleeepp....

Yeah, just woke up and took a shower after sleeping for a looong time.... (ok, so like 8 1/2 hours.... but still). Before that I was up for 42 1/2 of the last 45 1/2 hours, so I really needed it.

Anyway, the SURF's going well; I talked to Joel Burdick and John Hall, and they both gave me some really good ideas for the new planner (which still needs a name...suggestions?). I still have to do my first SURF report (which was due a while ago, and now Richard might be getting antsy). I'm almost done - just need a few more paragraphs - though actually I decided that the report should basically be a big picture rather than a bunch of nasty words (nasty words which I'd have to spend a lot of time writing). I'll post the whole thing here later (can you put up ps/pdf files on here?)

Oh, and later today I'm going to Union Station with the Y... I'll let you know how that turns out :)

update: only 5 bugs now, and they're all timber related. at least i'm done with all the rddfPathGen ones (yay for legacy code, even if it's mine)

millions of buu-uugs

buuugs for me; millions of buu-uuugs, wish they were free.

Actually only 9 that are mine, and 37 that i need to care about at all.... but still - i think i know what i'll be working on today :)

Tuesday, July 05, 2005

yawwnwn... somehow that was a tiring day... didn't do all that much though?

hung out with smaranda for a bit... she seemed a bit distant though... perhaps just hurt.

oh, and i called rach back, and she *somehow* swindled me into getting up early tomorrow to come hang out with her... :)

night world!

$1666.67

WOOOOOOTTT! Got paid today... boy do i need that money...

should go talk to john hall about splines later today...
